I am a student at the moment. I am studying English on a full-time basis at aLanguage School here in Guangzhou. We have classes in the mornings, afternoons,and evenings. Wednesday afternoons we are off, and are allowed to go swimmingat a nearby hotel. We have a number of foreign teachers who assist us in thecorrect pronunciation and grammar of the language.

I have a job. I am working in a workshop of a large manufacturing plant at themoment. I graduated from high school two years ago, and went to workimmediately. I am an assistant to one of the automotive electricians in theworkshop. I have to assist my artisan in getting his jobs done. As I have been studying on a full-time basis at an English Language School, wehave only one subject, namely English for Academic Purposes called EAP. We doreading and writing, practical speaking, and listening by means of cassettes.English is the language of the future, especially in the business world. What Imean to say is that when I am able to communicate well in English I will notonly be able to go and study abroad and improve my qualifications, but alsohave mastered a very necessary tool for my future career.

Well, I guess the speaking part. Please allow me to explain. Language is allabout communication. So when I am able to communicate with someone in English,I feel that I have achieved something. I particularly like our free talksessions with the foreign teachers. It gives me the opportunity to questionthem about their countries and cultures.

That’s an interesting question. Allow me to explain my personal view by shortlymentioning the following points: I believe that Peking University in Beijing isthe best one in the country. For example, it has the highest percentage ofstudents passing their courses of all the universities in China.

I have well established study habits. I always start my study promptly at eightin the evenings. I study for two hours, have a ten-minute break, and the studyfor another two hours. I follow this habit from Monday’s to Friday’s, but overthe weekends I spend most time in relaxing with my family or friends.

Certainly. Allow me to explain myself by shortly mentioning the followingpoints: First, we often use case studies in class. What I mean is that theprofessor gives us examples from real life to examine and report on. Moreover,our lecturers and some advisors from the relevant industries have set up ourstudy materials. What I mean to say is that the people who we are going to workfor one day have had the opportunity to tell the university what they think weshould be taught.
22. What kind of job would you prefer after graduation? ( 5 - 8 )
I would like to become a medical doctor. Please allow me to explain. Firstly, Iwould like to render a service in the community to which I will eventuallybelong. For example, I would like to assist the elderly that do not have thefinancial means to afford private hospitals.

I am planning to become a Hotel Manager. I believe that the hotel industry willbe growing greatly in future. People are becoming more affluent, and spend moreand more of their money on holidays. In addition, I believe that aftergraduation I will be able to find a good job anywhere in the world. All hotelsand resorts need well-trained professionals no matter where they are situated.The professionals ensure that hotel guests will have a good time and come backlater.

Yes. I have a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering. I graduated in 2001from the Liaoning University in Shenyang. It is the largest university inLiaoning Province and has about twenty thousand students.

I was most impressed by the knowledge and skills of my lecturers. For example,they had experience in the working environment, and could tell us exactly whatwe would come across there. Secondly, I was impressed by the facilities. Forexample, we had a large library, well-equipped laboratories, and sportingfacilities at our disposal.

Of course! Those were some of the best times in my life. They were absolutelycarefree days. I had no or very few worries at school. My parents provided inmy day-to-day needs, and all I had to do was get good marks. One more thing, Imade many good friends there. Some of my best friends today were people that Imet in school.

I am an Engineer working for a large construction company in the city. To bemore precise, I specialize in the building of railway bridges. When I amassigned a new bridge-building task, my colleague and I have to travel to thesite, have a review of the surroundings, and then decide what type of bridgewill be suitable. Lastly, we have to make recommendations to the railwaycompany of all the alternatives, and give them some idea of the costs.

Definitely. I can serve my community and my country through my job. Forexample, when my company builds a new road, many people benefit from our work.At the same time, it makes me feel good about myself. I become financiallyindependent with the salary earned through my job

The job means almost everything to me except my family. It provides a chancefor me to serve my community and my country. For example, when my companybuilds a new road, people living along the road benefit from our work. At thesame time, I personally get pride and the sense of achievement from the job.After we have completed a road, I am proud to drive on the road with my familyand explain to them what was involved during the building of the road.
29. If you could, would you change jobs? ( 5 - 6 )
No, not really. What I mean is that I am very happy in my present job. I getalong well with my colleagues and my salary is satisfactory. Should I change myjob, however, I might not find such nice people to work with and could be veryunhappy. What’s more important, I believe I will be able to develop my careerhere. If I keep up working hard and perform well, I could be promoted to headof a department in two years.
29. If you could, would you change jobs? ( 7 - 8 )
Although I am very happy in my present job, I believe one should always beambitious. That is to say, one should never be complacent, but should be on thelookout for opportunities to advance in your career. Furthermore, I would nothesitate for one moment if I could obtain a promotion by changing jobs. I knowone should show some loyalty to his/her present employer, but there has to be abalance between looking after one’s own interests and those of the presentemployer.
30. Are there possible changes that could affect your job in any way? ( 5 -8 )
There may be some but not many, I believe. The company that I am working for islarge and strong. In addition, I have a good relationship with my colleagues andmy boss. The only possible change that comes to my mind is I may receive apromotion. That would be a positive development, so I don’t worry about it atall.
